Pitch.
Assassinée par un voisin pédophile, une adolescente participe depuis l'au-delà au travail de deuil de sa famille. La jeune fille raconte en voix off le récit de sa vie et des étapes de sa mort.

Le roman avait eu un immense succès avec un thème accrocheur pas banal : dans une banlieue US middle class, une ado, violée et assassinée par un voisin pédophile, raconte ce qu'elle observe depuis le ciel... Impuissante de ne pas pouvoir indiquer aux siens le nom de son meurtrier, elle participe au douloureux travail de deuil de sa famille tout en tentant d'effectuer le sien et de renoncer à la terre. Pour être sincère, le livre m'était tombé des mains... Mais, ignorante de l'adaptation cinéma, je ne faisais pas le lien avec le livre en allant voir le film.

Au départ, une famille américaine idéale, un couple trop beau et charismatique, trois enfants dont Susie Salmon, une adolescente enjouée férue de photo et amoureuse dans son école d'un certain Ray qui vénère Shakespeare et lui écrit des poèmes signés "Le Maure" (Othello). Une voix off, celle de Susie, nous prévient qu'elle a été assassinée par un voisin en décembre 1973 à l'âge de quatorze ans. On va donc montrer un peu l'avant et beaucoup l'après assassinat. Le voisin (Stanley Tucci) est présenté comme un presque monsieur tout le monde, un obsessionnel discret qui construit, solitaire, des maisons de poupées. Retour de l'école, le jour où Susie a enfin son premier rendez-vous d'amour avec Ray, le voisin pédophile en question attire l'écolière dans une cave creusée par ses soins en plein champ, la famille habitant une drôle de banlieue champêtre.

Fin de l'existence de Susie Salmon sur cette terre mais pas dans la tête des gens qui l'aimaient. C'est le sujet du film, au moins partiellement : la permanence du souvenir des morts au delà de l'enveloppe charnelle, comment ils sont encore présents mentalement dans leur famille, comment petit à petit le deuil se construit et la douleur de l'entourage s'estompe. L'originalité du livre et du film, c'est que ce travail de deuil est vu et raconté, non pas du côté des vivants, par ceux qui restent, mais par la jeune fille assassinée, l'absente. C'est le volet positif...

Nième conte au cinéma, encore un... avec l'écueil de la représentation de l'au-delà à l'écran (dans "Mr Nobody, ça ne marche pas davantage). Un avant-paradis montré ici comme une mini-communauté hippie féminine adolescente désexualisée, tout en fleurettes, peace and platonic love. Le réalisateur a beau se donner un mal de chien pour bricoler que Susie morte soit à la fois absente et présente sur l'écran, on est parfois pas loin du ridicule ; mais le pire est ce que sous-entend cette imagerie nunuche et rassurante : en angélisant, aseptisant, enjolivant cette représentation de Susie morte hantant les lieux depuis l'anti-chambre du paradis (appelée "L'Entre-deux mondes"), se dirigeant vers le paradis au fur et à mesure que le deuil se construit chez ses parents (la simultanéisation des deux mécanismes est bien vue), on banalise le crime pédophile dont l'ado a été victime qu'on s'est bien gardé de montrer.

On finira bien par pousser l'assassin in extremis au fond d'un ravin, histoire qu'il y ait une justice, mais ça ne va pas loin... Parce qu'on a beau essayer de démontrer qu'il faut renoncer à la vengeance pour accomplir son travail de deuil, et je ne nie pas que la vengeance enchaîne au passé et aux traumatismes, c'est difficile à avaler. On est ici dans un cas théorique idéal : la morte renonce à la terre, comprenant que sa famille a besoin qu'elle s'efface pour revivre, la famille renonce donc par richochet à la vengeance et loin d'oublier Susie, ces derniers peuvent continuer à vivre tout en l'aimant quand même de façon apaisée. Un conte psychanalytique lénifiant en quelque sorte.

L'addition au casting de Susan Sarandon dans l'emploi d'une grand-mère égocentrique, excentrique, devenant meilleure en aidant les autres... met néanmoins un peu de piquant. Car tout le monde est beau et bon hormis le voisin/le diable et déborde de bons sentiments, Susie (Saoirse Ronan, la petite soeur de "Reviens-moi") ressemble à Sylvie Testud, Rachel Weisz très brune est magnifique et Mark Wahlberg, le cheveux sagement mi-long, très beau aussi.

Pour ce qui est de la comparaison avec le premier film de Peter Jackson, "Heavenly creatures ("Créatures célestes", 1994), bien différent des ultérieures mégaproductions du réalisateur (la trilogie du "Seigneur des anneaux"), hormis le point commun de parler de crimes ignobles, matricide dans "Créatures célestes", crime pédophile dans "Lovely bones", il y a peu de parenté. Petit film intimiste avec une vraie signature artistique, tourné en Nouvelle Zélande avec Kate Winslet débutante, "Créatures célestes", bien que traité à l'image de manière créative, parfois onirique, est l'adaptation d'un fait divers local ayant défrayé la chronique, l'assassinat par deux jeunes filles fusionnelles et exaltées de la mère de l'une d'entre elle voulant les séparer. En revanche, "Lovely bones" est une production débordant de moyens et de stars, un récit pavé de bons sentiments réparateurs, l'adaptation d'un best-seller (livre ayant une part d'inspiration biographique mais écrit-on jamais des fictions pures, autre débat...)

L'occasion de (re)découvrir "Créatures célestes"? Récit inspiré d'une double transgression sans rémission possible, autrement plus choc et hardi que "Lovely bones"... Pour ma part, en sortant de la projection, j'ai aussitôt commandé le DVD de "Créatures célestes" sur Priceminister...

Bonsoir! L'encyclopédie, ce n'est plus moi, c'est toi!!! Je ne sais pourquoi ce film m'était passé sous le nez, et quand je suis sortie de "Lovely bones", d'après les pitch du dernier, des futurs spectateurs s'attendaient visiblement à un pendant du premier, eh bien, c loin d'être le cas... Un DVD à conserver sous le coude, je suis parfaitt OK, il avait vraiment au départ une signature, une vision artistique et Kate Winslet irradie. PS. Qd on voit des DVD à quelques euros moins chers qu'une place de ciné et encore moins chers parfois que la VOD...
